#211 Top 10 Healthy Christmas Gift Ideas

Last night, my wife and I were talking about Christmas presents for our loved ones. We aren't big fans of consumerism and have talked about our minimalist lifestyle before on the podcast. But, not all consumerism is bad. Smart choices exist. What better way to infuse your healthy ideologies than giving a healthy gift at Christmas time. Here are the top 10 gifts that we decided on for our family members! Enjoy!

Organic Matcha Tea

Matcha tea comes from the same plant as green tea, except it is shaded from the sun for the last part of its growth, which allows the plant to create more beneficial amino acids such as L-Theanine. This amino acid boosts your calming brain chemical, or neurotransmitter, called GABA. Modern life depletes GABA levels due to chronic stress from emotional, chemical and biophysical interactions including EMF.

I only drink this brand of organic ceremonial-grade Matcha which is straight from Kyoto, Japan. It has the signature, bright, vivid green color which guarantees the antioxidants and amino acid content is exactly what you expect. You drink 1/2 teaspoon, and add a little organic raw honey to it as desired. If insulin or weight problems exist, try organic stevia instead.

Himalayan Salt Lamp

If you or your loved ones don't have a Himalayan salt lamp yet, you're missing out. We have three of them. With the heat emitted by the incandescent light bulbs, the lamp emits negative ions which can help to counteract EMF pollution that comes from cell phones, computers and other sources from your home.

We use it as our nightlight to reduce the impact on our melatonin production as well as to restore a healthy circadian rhythm that is so easily disrupted by artificial light exposure from cell phones, computers and other sources of light. Some say it purifies the air, which I am not sure about, but the EMF protection benefits, and the beautiful, warm glow that it gives to any indoor environment is worth the investment alone.

Essential Oil Diffuser

Essential oils were found in ancient egyptian tombs, which proves the high level of signifcance, even above food rations thousands of years before agriculture became widespread. Lavender, frankensince, eucalyptus, peppermint and citrus are some of our favorite and top recommendations for headaches, nausea, upset stomach, relaxation, sleep, and more. You can add the oils to your essential oil diffuser which is a far superior method of adding a wonderful scent to your home, which omits harmful endocrine-disrupting synthetic fragrances like you find in conventional air fresheners, candles and plug-ins.

Tell Grandma or Grandpa it's time to ditch the Glade and upgrade their home with the gift of this diffuser. Like salt lamps, we enjoy them in many rooms of our home, and use them topically as well as in our bathtub for relaxation and enhanced breathing ability. A diffuser will work for hours with just a few ounces of water and 3-6 drops of your favorite essential oil.

Instant Pot

Keeping the tone of home improvements, nothing beats an Instant Pot. We use ours often for stews, soups, bone broth and more. You can cook an entire meal to slow-cooked perfection in only half an hour. Literally. I'm sure you've set a stew in the morning, leave it for 8 hours to return home and eat it. That's fine too, but I've always had a weird feeling about leaving a crock pot on at home while I'm gone.

With the Instant Pot, not only does the food taste better when it's used in comparison to a conventional crockpot, but you can come home at five, prepare your ingredients such as meat, veggies and spices, and have the meal fully cooked to perfection in half an hour. It's insanely useful, especially for busy people or those that have a baby that demands attention. Trust us! :)

Insulated Water Bottle

One morning outside of Austin, TX, my wife and I went for a short hike and decided to leave the water bottle in the car. The temperature rapidly rose to over 100 degrees, which promoted anxiety on my part. My wife began to get flushed and fatigued without water, even though it was only a 10-minute hike. We returned to the car which had this insulated water bottle in it. Ice cold. It was a savior.

You're likely aware of the importance of avoiding BPA and even worse, BPS which are used in plastic and high density storage materials. An insulated stainless-steel bottle is the way to go. You guarantee your health, but also the right temperature of your beverage, even days later in some cases. It's a must on your own Christmas list, but can be a huge help to your family trying to rid their toxic plastic addiction.

KDF Shower Filter

There are many shower filters on the market. Only one of them meets my standards, which is this one. I have tested dozens of air purifers, shower filters, water filters and the like over the last several years, only to be dissapointed by most of them. Once we installed this shower filter, my wife's skin condition, which was worsened by unfiltered shower water, magically dissapeared. Her hair, skin and mood was better too.

Trihalomethanes are linked to various cancers. The biggest source of exposure to THM's come from your shower. The hotter the water, the more exposure you have. Just take a look at this study on THM's and cancer if you don't believe me. It's a huge problem, but the solution is so simple that there are no excuses not to fix it! Here's the filter we use, and my life has been changed for the better since. I even drink a sip of the shower water sometimes, which is something I wouldn't dare do before, due to pesticide residues, flouride and pharmeceutical drugs in the tap water supply.

Organic Castille Soap

The natural soap market has expanded significantly, which is great news! However, many of the companies still use artificial fragrances and other additives that I don't recommend. The healthiest organic soap, which has a nearly endless list of uses and applications is this one. We use it for the baby, our hands, our dishes and more.

Nutrition as you know is an important first step of any health journey. The next step which goes into replacing toxic soaps, especially ones that include microbeads which destroy the environment and ecosystem, is the next important step. Check this soap out and get some for yourself and others.

Ceramic Griddle

After nutrition and personal care products comes the actual tools that you use to cook with. We used coventional nonstick teflon for years as teenagers, cooking together, not paying any attention to the flakes of black that ended up in our meals sometimes. Who knows how much of that we are still holding in our bodies.

Then came this ceramic griddle which is free of PTFE and PFOA chemicals. It's super efficient too. It heats up very quickly and cooks our pastured sausage in record time, cooking evenly. We have ditched all cast iron, and have gone ceramic. It's a smart choice that I encourage you and your family members to make! I'm getting one of these for my parents, who are still using that old greasy teflon one.

EMF Protection Laptop Pad

I've discussed EMF in great detail on the podcast. Those episodes get far more downloads than episodes about other aspects of health. People like you are aware of how quickly these devices have permeated into every aspect of our lives. And we should be wary. I've measured 9mg coming from my Macbook Pro. After I found that out, I purchased a DefenderPad, which has reduced the levels by about 99.9%.

If you use the coupon code "notjustpaleo" they'll give you 10% off. They also make EMF protective cases for smartphones, but I've heard mixed reviews about phone cases. Some say the phone emits more EMF trying to reach the tower when blocked by cases. So I just never carry my phone and leave it in airplane mode most days of the week. But, the laptop pad has been a huge breakthrough for me. I travel with it too. Here's the pad I use.

Wood Standing Desk

You can spend hundreds or thousands on a standing desk. Everyone knows "sitting is the new smoking", and there's many options out there. There are companies that will sell you fancy, electric desks, which I think defeats the whole purpose of a simple, healthy life. I don't want more buttons, cords and EMF in my life, I want less.

So I use a simple wood standing desk. It sits on top of your existing desk, which you probably already own. Why spend tons if you don't have to. Save your money for organic food and the other health-supporting items on this list. I alternate between sitting and standing and encourage people to do the same. You can stand all day and still have back pain. Walking and real movement is key to integrate in between bouts of sitting and standing. That's what your DNA expects at least.

That's All Folks

This rounds up the list. Was there something you picked up for a family member or yourself this year that I should know about? I'm always interested to hear what other cool items out there exist to support a healthy lifestyle. Not all consumerism is bad. Enjoy yourself and Merry Christmas.
