Are you sensitive to other people and their energies? If so, it may feel like you're at a disadvantage. Due to the epidemic proportions of depression, obesity and poverty that are encircling the globe, it can be tough to stay positive.
However, feeling sorrow and pain from the energy of others should not be a death sentence.
I will teach you a few simple shifts in your perception to help you live in a more blissful state.
Acknowledge the problems
The problem with adults, which I didn't realize until I was one, is that we avoid problems like the plague. We want to cover all the ugly parts about life and hide them under the carpet. This is the same type of thinking that got us in trouble.
From the pollution of our rivers, lakes, streams and oceans, to air pollution and other environmental damage we've done, we keep ignoring the problem. I'm afraid we will ignore our problems until it's too late.
However, if we can begin to shift our focus to the problems and work on solutions, we will be better off.
There are many similarities to our lifestyle and a cat in a litter box covering up it's poop. Cats may actually do a better job than us!
Action step: Acknowledge the issues around you and take baby steps towards solutions. If the problem is too big, such as ocean pollution, focus on raising awareness.
Get fired up
I tend to keep a pretty calm demeanor which you're probably familiar with if you listen to the show. I've learned there are certain times in life where high intensity energy is required to accomplish something. Often times, in the most intense of experiences, your adrenaline and endorphins make you feel superhuman. These are the times where our true primal nature shows through our domesticated society.
I'm not advocating anger or violence. I do think that humans as individuals are far more powerful than they believe. We have huge potential for strength, revolt and upheaval. As we continue on the same broken path as our ancestors, we need an extreme change.
Now is the time to get fired up about your issues.
Action step: Let your voice be heard. Raise up with people in your local community. Form a group, club or meetup group designed to empower and help each other achieve the same goal. Strength in numbers is historically powerful.
Quit caring what people think
Worrying about how people perceive you is a massive mistake. If I were to shape and sculpt my show to appeal to every single person, I'd probably be #1 on the podcast charts. However, I stick to my guns, heart and goal to provide the truth.
This comic may present a reason my show is not aired on mainstream television and other more popular outlets.
“First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, and then you win.” Mahatma Gandhi
These are two pieces of empowerment you should keep locked in your consciousness.
If you want to achieve something radical, you have the push the boundaries of social acceptance. In college I took a sociology class that focused strictly on discussing and penetrating social norms. Part of our work was to go out in society and break "the rules".
We did silly things like walk backwards down the sidewalk, wear underwear on the outside of our pants and other ridiculous things. I ended up running into a bingo hall and yelling "bingo" way before bingo was even possible. It was hilarious and exhilarating. Societal pressures and common sense usually keep us from doing things like this.
If you live in fear or constantly monitor people's perception of you, you'll end up paralyzed. You'll be afraid to make any action in fear of messing up.
It's in our failures that we learn how to succeed.
Action step: Do something you've always feared and quit worrying about people judging you. "Haters" can be a good thing. Use them as a weapon to sharpen your skills.
Separate yourself from the negativity
What happens when you marinate a piece of meat in the fridge for a few days? The flavors you added to the bag are now part of the meat.
This is the same thing that happens when you "marinate" yourself in society. You absorb, transform and morph into a homogenized version of your former self. We lose sense of who we are when we are mixed into the presence of others for too long.
Scheduling alone time is one of the most important things you can do for your health, personality and sanity.
If you are surrounded by a negative workplace, friends and family members, get away. It's that simple. I know it seems like you are stuck around certain negative situations, people and places, but you really aren't.
I've lived in 3 different parts of the United States in the last 10 years and am proof that you can seriously change your scenery and vibe at any time. Logistically, there will be some roadblocks and other issues that you'll have to work out. However, what are you waiting for?
Will you keep waiting for your happiness to blossom?
Do you say:
- I'll be happy when....
- If I can just save a little more money I'll...
- I can't get away from this job....
These are just a few examples of things I've told myself. These were the thoughts that paralyzed me from making decisions that would later change my life for the better.
When I was able to sit in the woods by myself and really think about what direction I wanted to go in life, the moves I had to make were crystal clear.
Action step: Go in nature, sit by yourself and think. Bring a pen and paper and wait until you have something to write down. If no thoughts surface, walk and sit down again.
Just enjoy yourself
At the end of it all, we are supposed to enjoy life.
It's when we get caught up in the monotony of bills, work, traffic, cell phones, social media, drama, television, news, war, negativity, violence and just plain stupidity that we forget what life is about.
Life is a journey. You're on the journey right this second. This is part of your personal history book.
If you had to look back at this very moment 20 years from now, would you be happy with the decisions you made after reading this article? I sure hope so.
The power is in your hands. One of the few people holding you back from success and the ability to enjoy life is yourself. Trust me, I've been there.
Action step: Turn on music that makes you feel good. Put on your headphones. Go for a walk. Smile. Write down your blessings and ask for help on the next chapter of your journey.
